The Doom Generation

Opening your film with Nine Inch Nails is a surefire way to get me hooked.Gregg Araki’s acidic, ultra-‘90s spiral into sex, blood, and nihilism plays like a post-apocalyptic road movie minus the apocalypse. It’s my first foray into Araki’s filmography, and while I can’t say the film worked for me in a traditional sense, it’s undeniably dripping in style. Amy, Jordan, and Xavier are drifters in every sense of the word, stumbling from scene to scene, leaving behind a trail of violence, sweat, and cum. Conversations are often cut short by bursts of pulpy gore, or sex, or both. There’s something deliberately performative about it all, like Araki isn’t interested much in telling a story so much as creating a vibe. It reminded me a lot of Repo Man—same satirical bite, same lo-fi surrealism—but The Doom Generation trades nuance for aesthetic. The production design is brilliant (Jennifer Gentile deserves more recognition for this), and Jim Fealy’s cinematography is underrated. Still, for all its spunk, I didn’t find much to latch onto. I get it—it’s about societal decay and personal disaffection, and about the ugliness of everything in a late stage capitalism hellhole—but I found it all grating after a while. Rose McGowan is sexy as hell, and Jonathan Schaechmakes for a decent wild card, but it all feels a little too...I don’t know…deliberate? Maybe you had to be there. Maybe you had to be them. I’m not sure. But for what it’s worth, the soundtrack in this absolutely rips. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6) • The 1990s — Ranked (https://boxd.it/AXiey)
