Diary entries forHoliday Inn
Holiday Inn
First holiday film of the season! I couldn’t pick one, so I chose randomly and this one popped up, so I gave it another chance. Bing Crosby honestly has no chemistry whatsoever on the screen, and the blackface sequence is absolutely horrifying to watch. It’s a decent musical, but has a lot of problems that it cannot overcome. Still a decent film to get into the holiday spirit, and one that I’ll likely revisit in many years, but not again anytime soon.
Holiday Inn
Holiday Inn is a film that is shrouded in controversy, being more well-known for it's sequence of blackface, rather than the catchy songs. I really enjoyed this film, since it captured a similar spirit to White Christmas, but it's hard to love this film with that blackface sequence. It's absolutely inexcusable for them to include this sequence, since the film would have made just as much sense if it weren't included at all. It was 1942 when this film was released, which was a very different time, but that does not excuse this atrocious portrayal. I did find myself loving the musical sequences, especially the final sequences of the film, but I just can't separate the rest of the film from that one sequence. Holiday Inn is a fun film and a great musical, but with a scene with multiple white actors dressing up in blackface, the film loses a lot of merit, and dampers on the film as a whole.
