Star Trek

Star Trek

When I was in elementary school, my 5th-grade math teacher loved Star Trek. His room was themed like the show, he had memorabilia everywhere, it was hard to escape the show. I myself had never had interest in the show, as I wasn't into science fiction (and in all honesty, I'm still not). It was our last day of school, we took our last tests, and he decided to show us an episode of his favorite show. I watched it, but never was really interested in it. Flash forward 8 years, and here I am, finally seeing the reboot of one of my favorite teachers' shows. Star Trek felt like a J.J. Abrams film. I've seen a couple of his films already, and I can see his style in every one of them. His typical shots are there, as well as his well-known lens flares. The visuals are stunning, with some beautiful scenery. But a really good looking film isn't all that it needs to be a good film. The plot felt like it's been done before many times, feeling really recycled. I get that the characters are so beloved, and maybe it's because I don't have a personal connection to the show, but I just couldn't really like any of the characters (Uhura was the only exception, and that only was because of my love for Zoe Saldana). Maybe it's because I never got into the television show, but I just couldn't find Star Trek to be highly interesting. Star Trek is one of the most iconic television series of all time, with almost every person at least knowing about Captain Kirk and Spock. I'm not sure that a remake was necessary, as the show is still relevant and entertaining today. J.J. Abrams is a good director, putting out some really good films, but this seems to be his weakest so far. Maybe once I decide to watch the show I will find a new love for this film, but for now, Star Trek just is your typical science fiction space adventure film.

Star Trek

“Space: The Final Frontier....” Fun fact: this was the first movie I ever saw by myself in theaters. God it was so packed, I picked a seat on far right side thinking no one would sit next to me but by the time the opening started I was sandwiched between 2 couples. (😭) I wouldn’t say this is got me into Star Trek; my mother and re-runs of Voyager and TNG did that. But it is what made go back and rewatch TOS and begin to fall in love with Trek on the whole....I’ve lost track of how many times I rewatched this as a kid, revisiting it 10 years later as an adult just fills me with all kinds of nostalgia and longing. Older Trek fans dislike it but I thought while yes it was fun, and action packed, it was also true to the spirit of the original characters. I’m forever sad we won’t be getting a 4th entry but, at least we got two good movies. (Also, this is a Mckirk household baby!)

Star Trek

“To boldly go where no one has gone before!” I have a very complicated relationship with this movie. On one hand JJ Abrams is a fucking nostalgic hack who’s incapable of telling a good story with decent character development. On the other...this was the spark the full on re-ignited my love for ALL things trek. And it really is such a great way to create a new film series without erasing the original Trek canon. I just wish a more competent writer and director had gotten their hands in the script.

Star Trek
