Gozu
You know you're in for something weird and sinister when the opening scene of the movie has a Yakuza member swinging a leash attached to a dog above his head like Tarzan. However, it doesn't actually arrive until the final ten minutes or so when the film finally brings all sorts of that weird and sinister, and oh so mad ruckus. At two hours and ten minutes, Takashi Miike's Gozu limps at a sour and slow pace, unraveling a certainly weird but drudging mystery within itself. Does it pay off? In a way, yes—but, then again, it rather doesn't, solely because I'm still wrapping my head around the meat between the opening and the finale. There are giant specks of grotesque nonsense—particularly that ending—and still, the film lost interest in me thanks to its snail-like pace and uninteresting lead. 2.5/5
