Diary entries forTwinless
Twinless
the script is too honest to be comforting, too funny to be tragedy. it sits in the exact middle, like grief does.

For this night, I can't believe That it's finally me and you, and you and me. Just us, and your friend Dennis Do-do-do-do-do-do, Dennis. In this movie Dennis is just like annoying, selfish third wheeler, i can't stan him. He's not Rocky, and you can't act he's Rocky, move on i guess? Maybe if this movie just only Roman / Dennis relationship i can take it, but when Marcie came, i can't stand Dennis behaviour. That's why i hate when gay movie make woman involved too. But overall it's a fresh good movie!
Twinless
Imagine meeting a guy you connect with in such an intimate way, someone who shares your grief from their own shoes. Someone who seems to understand you without you having to explain yourself too much. And then, only later, when you’re already getting along incredibly well, they reveal that they were never honest with you: that they invented a tragic story just to connect, out of the need to feel attachment and an emotional reciprocity they didn’t know how to obtain any other way. Well… just like James Sweeney playing Dennis, I could be that friend. Twinless is a dark comedy with a message that feels as raw as it is realistic. There is no romanticism in pain, only discomfort, selfishness, and a desperate need not to be alone. Sweeney understands this tone perfectly and knows how to guide Dylan O’Brien toward a vulnerable, restrained place. And yes, without exaggeration, this is by far the best role of his career. The relationship with grief, selfishness, depersonalization, and the emptiness of loneliness constantly move between both characters; it is an uncomfortable dance that travels from Dennis’s guilt to Roman’s emotional progress. Visually, it feels mundane, close, even comfortable within what a dark comedy can allow itself. There is a deep complexity in presenting characters who take advantage of someone else’s grief to try to heal their own, different but not invalid because of it. And many times the problem isn’t looking for a way to get over something, but how we do it: whether by dragging along a lie that sooner or later will collapse under its own weight, or by dealing with an internal guilt, painful but honest, in order to seek support within oneself and only then, in others.
Twinless
At some point during my viewing experience when we briefly go back to Dennis’ and Rocky’s brief “relationship” I realized right then and there that Dennis definitely didn’t have a twin and he was using Roman as an outlet to experience not only friendship but a connection that he’s never had with anyone, hence his intricately deep wanting for a twin throughout his entire life because of his loneliness. Dennis wanted a chance of experiencing that brief euphoric emotional moment smidgen he shared with Rocky through Roman even though deep down he truly knows nothing of that sort could’ve arise again. Dennis was a devastatingly good portrayal of your average lonely person in this day and age. And the film cleverly unravels that throughout its run time as we’re momentarily paced through Romans lens but when that brief shift happens and we’re aware of the circumstances that have led to Roman and Dennis’ relationship, the film outright highlights how much Dennis projects about himself without even realizing it. Most notably before he and Roman enter Marcie’s party. James Sweeney’s comedic timing in this was absolutely masterclass. He pretty much reminds me of myself, not to toot my own horn but I too am pretty gifted in the art of sarcasm and quick quips that perfectly capture their circumstantial environment. Dylan O’Brians portrayal of two completely different characters was exceptional too, I never thought i’d see the day he’d play a gay character and do it very well to add on to that. Not to mention the other character he plays who’s not only grappling with the loss of his other half but simultaneously trying to be a much better person in the absence of his brother. The use of twins to convey loneliness and grief when one does unfortunately lose their other half was such a unique and brilliant choice from James. I really had a good time with this and the performances were really great all around.

Twinless
Homosexual Dear Evan Hansen. Except here the lead is, shockingly, less developed, and thus what he does is far farmore reprehensible. Kind of shocking you could make a film like this and not be interested in making your lead sympathetic or at the very least, convey to the audience why he is the way he is. Good performance from O’Brien though.
