Roofman
A kind-hearted criminal, hmm I'm confused about how to judge this, because on the one hand he doesn't deserve that punishment, on the other hand the victim will definitely lose and law is law. At first I thought it was a heist comedy movie, but it turned out to be a biopic, it's fun though but too much drama.

I MISS MY HEELYSđ Maybe itâs bc Iâm a girldad myself, or maybe I just love Channing Tatum, but this was sooo my jam! It balances the comedy and tragic elements very well, I found myself crying during a few scenes but also laughing my ass off at others. I was rooting for Roofman the whole time, despite his flaws, he really was just a victim of circumstance who made some bad decisions, but ultimately his intentions were always good. Always glad to see Lakeith Stanfield, even if he didnât get a lot of screen time. Absolutely wild that this is a true story, but even more so that Channing Tatumâs characterâs name is ACTUALLY Jeff lol. Intrusive thought: getting $300 for 30 games ($10 a pop) at a pawn shop is crazy work bc now youâd be lucky to get $30 total

83/100 Check out my 2025 ranked - https://boxd.it/Fn1G4 Last year, I had Roofman as one of my most anticipated films for 2025. I just knew Channing Tatum was there and read something and thought this could be good. 2025 was not a year I thought would be that good so I thought this would easily be a highlight. I didnât know Derek Cianfrance directed it because if I did, Iâd have it higher in the list. Also having watched âI Know This Much Is Trueâ last month, my appreciation for that man has grown even higher to the point that heâs one of the four favourite directors working right now, he conveys pain and just every real emotion unlike any other director Iâve seen. Every project of his is unique, not something exceptional in terms of plot or flair; itâs just raw emotion. His work makes me feel things and that is all I go into a film for. Now for Roofman, I think this might be Channing Tatumâs best work yet, I havenât seen much of him outside comedy but heâs really great here, heâs smart, kind, approachable like his usual self but heâs also in pain, heâs doing things that he wishes he didnât have to do and thatâs essentially the essence of our real life character in Jeffrey Manchester. I havenât done my research but I believe from all the things they said in the credits and throughout the film about this man, he portrayed him and his state of mind as best as could be done. âYou the smartest dumb nigga I ever known.â âUgly ass Brad Pitt!â Not many profound lines here but I found these funny although that first line really just represents Jeffrey, he was exactly that and this film answers why he was like that. Heâs a family man, all he wanted was to be around a kind woman with some lovely girls, he touched the hearts of those he interacted with and I believe that makes him so much more than a mere criminal. This film is proof that not all criminals are bad people. There are so many out there who just do things out of desperation because they could not succeed at something that would give them a societal standing, they could not live up to those around them. The desire for love and affection is why he got caught and thatâs also why he tried to escape multiple times. I donât even know that many people but I can tell for a fact that there are millions of people out there who havenât done anything âillegalâ but are truly horrible people so where does that leave us? So weâd rather share a free world with someone like Jeffrey who never hurt anyone out of spite other than large corporations (didnât really hurt them but fuck them anyway) and is genuinely good guy or the millions of people who inflict psychological damage to others kinda like Peter Dinklage as a boss here, heâs a bad person but he didnât do the crime at hand here. Of course Iâm talking about people much worse than that. Unfortunately though, thereâs this cap to real life adaptations because while life can be really exciting like this manâs was, it doesnât quite transcend to a 2 hour film. Thereâs a cap to how much you could convey and just keeping the audience engaged in something thatâs really quite innocent, heartbreaking but innocent. Great performances from Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst with a nice homage in the credits but thatâs about it really. Itâs a grounded film about a good person trying to do good things but fucking up every now and then in order to do those good things. And although this is Derekâs most underwhelming project so far (at least by his standards), I had a good time and thatâs what counts.

Why is no one talking about how Channing Tatum is aging like fine wine? Iâve only seen a handful of his movies, but this might be his best performance yet. Honestly, I clicked on the movie thinking it was going to be a comedy based on the poster, and by the time I realized it wasnât, I was already fully pulled into the story. Kirsten Dunst is as beautiful and phenomenal as ever, and Peter Dinklage added a delight presence every time heâs in the screen. Channing Tatum ,on the other hand, completely nails this flawed, genuine character in a way I didnât expect. In the end, this was a really heartwarming watch for me. The Roofman doesnât get the perfect ending he mightâve once imagined, but he finds something better: a sense of purpose, and a place where he finally fits. Itâs bittersweet, but beautifully so.
Roofman
For sure one of the more underrated and overlooked films of the year.
