The Girlfriend

You don't need anyone else.❞ 𐄁──── ↶*ೃ✧˚. ❃ ↷ ˊ- ────𐄁 One of the better Telugu films of this year, The Girlfriend imparts a powerful message and aims to make the audience uncomfortable, and it certainly does both these things. I'm not a huge fan of Rashmika, but I will say that this is probably her best performance so far; her facial expressions and body language captured her character Bhooma's emotions really well, and it was very easy to feel her pain. I had to keep reminding myself that Dheekshith Shetty was just acting, because my God did his character piss me off and make me extremely uncomfortable. The film perfectly captured what it's like to be in an abusive relationship, whether it's between partners or parents and children, and the dangers women face trying to break free, but I wish more time was dedicated to Bhooma's realisation and arc; the first forty-five minutes or so of the film went by so slowly, which meant that in turn the ending was a bit rushed. On the whole, though, it's very worth giving this a watch, though be prepared to restrain yourself from punching the screen.
