Diary entries forThe Color of Money
The Color of Money
Shoot, this has aged to a very particular perfection. Seeing the two films back to back was a good decision. And hey, there's Mastrantonio again, who we recently spotted in White Sands! Now I wanna' go and check out The Abyss and Robin Hood again.
The Color of Money
"But I'm hungry again and you bled that back into me" Perfect movie. Charming, the long tracking shots are everything to me. Tom Cruise as per usual giving the best performance. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio blew me away, love her! Paul Newman dilf. I also do think that Newman invited Cruise to his fuck hut
The Color of Money
Newman is unsurprisingly great here, though it’s insane that in his incredible career thisis his only Oscar winning performance. Arguably the weakest of his eight Best Actor noms. If you ever doubted that Marty had the juice, look no further than the fact that the coolest Tommy C has ever been is when he’s wearing a shirt with his name on it, dancing like a jackass, and singing along to Warren Zevon’s 10th, or 11th best song.
The Color of Money
Very cool film
The Color of Money
Despite The Color of Money being a legacy sequel to Robert Rossen’s The Hustler—a fact I didn’t even realize until after my initial viewing (and a film I haven’t watched)—Martin Scorsese’s film manages to stand on its own as an engrossing, self-contained story, marked by his unmistakable energy and style that defined his work during this time in his career. Passion and pragmatism lie at the heart of the film, embodied by Vincent and Eddie, two pool players who represent these opposing forces, respectively. Tom Cruise delivers a perfectly cocky and arrogant performance that works as a foil to that Paul Newman’s much more measured, business-minded Eddie. Legacy also looms over its characters, lending Eddie an air of squandered potential and Vincent a desperate hunger for relevance. Vincent also mirrors the youthful exuberance and love for the game that Eddie may have once had, regardless if he realizes that or not. This dynamic fuels the entirety of Scorsese’s film, brought to life through Michael Ballhaus’ gorgeous cinematography and Robbie Robertson’s exceptional score. Several scenes stand out as clear inspirations for modern films—most recently Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers—proving yet again that Scorsese has always been ahead of the curve, operating on a level few can hope to ever reach. As I grow older, I find myself appreciating Scorsese more and more, not just as a filmmaker, but as an artist. The Color of Money is a testament to that brilliance, a film that excels in every aspect—from its technical panache to its emotionally charged storytelling. It’s a work that continues to reveal more layers the more I think more about it. If anything, the film works well to cement Scorsese’s status as one of the greatest creative minds of our generation. • Watched in 2024 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/rMle4)
The Color of Money
“You gotta have two things to win. You gotta have brains and you gotta have balls. And you got too much of one and not enough of the other.” Safe to say...with only a handful of Scorsese films that I've watched so far, this type of filming from him is something I wasn't used to. Maybe because I watched his mafia films first, I don't really know. I really liked Paul and Tom's dynamic in this film. Very well balanced, and equally played their characters really well. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was a great in this, too. And the cinematography, soundtrack, and the camera style is something else as well! Overall, I liked this more than I thought I would...albeit not knowing much about pool in such an aspect like this. Also, Paul is so hot in this film....yeah I guess I need to watch The Hustler (https://boxd.it/298G) now.
The Color of Money
The Color of Money is a really great film. The soundtrack is fantastic and the story is really good and exciting. The performances of Paul Newman and Tom Cruise are amazing and their characters are interesting. I like how many differences and parallels they have. The cinematography and camera work is so beautiful, I think it’s a very underrated Scorsese film, it’s definitely one of his better ones. Very enjoyable and I recommend it, especially if you liked Marty Supreme.
The Color of Money
Tom “I am Intensity” Cruise was something else in this. His dancing while playing pool was hilarious. Need to add that to my game asap. Paul Newman was great (per usual). Might be in the minority, but I liked this way more than the first. Stay off the nose beers kids. 8.5
The Color of Money

The Color of Money
it’s like a nightmare, isn’t it? it just keeps getting worse & worse, doesn’t it? y’all when i say nobody does music in cinema like MARTY, I MEAN ABSOLUTELY NOBODY! i literally added 5 songs to my library just from this film. this is such an underrated film in my opinion. paul newman was phenomenal as eddie & mixing that w a young hungry tom cruise was just perfect! they play off each other so well. marty really might be the best director of all time man. like genuinely! just some of his camera work is really out of this world in this film. the way the first match between vincent & grady was shot was honestly PURE PERFECTION. especially w the guitar rifts in the back from “let yourself in for it” was one of the most beautiful things i’ve ever seen on film. then the way the guitar slows down starting the fading transitioning montage of eddie watching the match. like OMFG BRO! MARTY IS REALLY DIFFERENT BRUH! also, the mirror shot through the pool ball..THIS MAN IS GOATED!!!
