“No one is anyone until they are.” This film is a hype train fueled by sex, drugs, and Irish Hip-Hop. So many wildly hilarious sequences, a banger soundtrack, but more importantly; the cultural preservation of the Irish language. As someone who is mainly of Irish descent, I was thrilled to see some representation of my ancestral culture and I am hoping to dig deeper into the roots of the Irish language. One thing that I think cannot be understated is the significance of music. How it gives a voice to the oppressed, and connects people across various cultures. After all, music is a universal language; despite artists singing (or in this case, rapping) in their native tongues, we can still understand what they are communicating through how they pour their emotions into the songs they write. Safe to say I will be blasting Kneecap’s music whenever I get the chance. #StraightOuttaBelfast

I didn’t realize this was so contemporary, I’m seeing the little press about it I did see, I thought it was mid 90s or so. Not the only pleasant surprise here, as the film is a blast! Breathing fresh life into the somewhat standard biopic, the energy crackles and pulses along with the music, and jumps out the screen. The cast, playing themselves, are impressive in their performances, they’re surprisingly adept actors. The music is rad, and the message regarding the precarious state of indigenous languages in the modern world is an important one, even if its universal messaging is really only paid lip service at the end, the film itself makes a great case for the importance of them.
