The Haunting

Great adaptation of the story! The house is really something and everything is shot like a high-contrast, all-angles dream. The interiority of Eleanor is made external via voice-over, if it isn't already written plain on her wild-eyed face. They really pull off the slow-building descent (ascent?) into other realms -- very raw and unsettling for the time I'd imagine and, given the themes and empathy for the character, still harrowing today. With our self-inflicted Bond marathoning here lately, it was a small delight to see "Moneypenny" turn up, if only for a bit.

The Haunting

Visually this movie is incredible; love the eerie gothic vibes of the old house, plenty of spooky moments that I’m sure were scary for its time. I’m a sucker for a good haunted house movie, definitely want to revisit this one. My main gripe with this are the unnecessary homophobic comments Eleanor makes to Theo, that part has aged like milk.

The Haunting

“It’s always been about family!” Pffft okay Dom Toretto. One thing about adaptations of Shirley Jackson’sThe Haunting of Hill House; they always nail Theo as a character. Intrusive thought: Why are the VFX so ugly in this film?? Nice split-diopter tho.

The Haunting

The Haunting is one of those rare gems that you find that you know you will always cherish. I honestly loved everything about this film. It did get confusing at times, but it would correct itself. That's what I really enjoyed about this film. It would stray and get itself on course. The black and white was amazing. Maybe it's been a while since I saw a black and white movie, but it was spectacular in this! The Haunting is honestly an amazing film. It still is spooky, even though it was made over 50 years ago.

The Haunting

The Haunting is one of my favorite horror films of all time. There are genuine scares, even if they feel dated and cheesy at times. It's one of those films that I could watch over and over and never get tired of watching it. It's the perfect film to sit and watch in s stormy day, just like how it was while I watched it.

The Haunting

In the beginning I complained about the absence of visible ghosts, but then I realized I was so stupid for complaining about that. The film is a psychological horror masterpiece. 60s horror films hit different for real. Another thing: I loved Theo so much. My new favorite lesbian character.

The Haunting

The dead are not quiet in Hill House Small words with a sense of the nitty-gritty. You know you're in for a scare. The scare is Robert Wises's, The Haunting, a classic horror flick you'll dread not to reminisce at night; The time of night when it takes a small walk down the hallway to the bedroom. It's sure to tantalize your nightmares in the midst of slumber - a not so good sleep you'll earn. The Haunting is a well-crafted, thought-provoking horror - in the obvious thought that it's either the house or characters that are insane, and insanity is your least likely friend in Hill House. The edgy cinematography emphasizes the feel of insanity, building the house as a character itself. The black & white brings an abundance of fear to the Hill House and the film. It's a spook-fest of delectable classic horror. GRADE: A

The Haunting

Voiceover: the movie In some scenes successfully evokes the feeling / sense of the house & its inanimate objects watching the inhabitants. So that's good. I found it disappointing. Now what follows is just me comparing it to the book; idk maybe I'm being overly harsh: Eleanor has such a rich inner life in Shirley Jackson's work that Robert Wise tried to capture in those voiceovers. But it clearly wasn't enough. The characters, and their initial family dynamic (as perceived by E) are not well set up. Nell and Theo's complicated friendship is particularly underdeveloped, considering it was one of her two central relationships there (the other being with the house). It also doesn't show Eleanor's side that plays along & has fun with the group, nor does it show (the extent of) everyone's fear. [Going so far as to transfer their fearful moments and such onto her: whether it's Theo's lines, changing the reason of shifting rooms (from T's bloodied room & panic to doctor's concern for E), or giving a nod (with E's staircase spook) to the incident with the doctor on the first night, wherein he went alone to get a game, got so spooked that he told them not to wander alone.] Thereby doing a disservice to all. It comes off as her overreacting instead, because other characters seem mostly chill about the occurrences. Wise' attempt I guess to quickly show her worsening mental health (but feeling rushed and lacking depth)? And to aggressively underscore the question of, whether it was all the result of the house or her psychological state?
