Ran

Ran is quite possibly the most visually stunning film ever made, which is not an easy feet. The colours in this are like nothing you’ve ever seen before or will ever see again, truly breathtaking. There is a feeling you’re watching an art piece rather than a film, but still this is fantastic. The story was well done, and I especially like that Lady Kaede purposely ended the Ichimoji clan. A fitting end to the epic.

Ran

Ran feels less like a classic film and more like a moving painting. Every shot is composed in such a way that you almost want to pause and frame it – the colors of the armies, the vast landscapes, the fire and smoke are almost unreal in their beauty. I was particularly impressed by how calmly and with such control Kurosawa stages the chaos. Even in the most brutal moments, the film possesses something sublime, almost artistic. The famous castle scene is the best example of this simultaneously terrifying and visually stunning. Despite the beautiful visuals, the story didn't quite grab me, but it's still a wonderful film.

"What a sky!" Staggering, large, big-scope. There are times where this films kind of drags for me but my god that set-piece in the first hour of the film, the fields and at the end HOLY FAWK. The battle in the first hour fucks so hard cause of the lack of sound and just only music, it feels like a silent film just with the colors and it’s amazing. Tatsuya is coked up in this one. The remastered looks tremendous. I would definitely appreciate the pacing more in my next rewatch and also write something better but lot’s to think about this film!! Lady Kaede #divadown

Man is born crying, when he has cried enough, he dies. Greed, power, betrayal and deception are probably the words whose meanings encompass the sheer scope of the film's narrative. Kurosawa portrays hell on earth through heavenly images, surrounded by the most beautiful takes and use of color that you could ever fathom. A story worthy of the massive scale of this masterpiece, Akira Kurosawa's last epic couldn't have been anything less.

KAOS Bir babanın hayal kırıklıkları, kan, kibir, güç hevesi, ölüm ve Buda “Tanrılar nerede? Buda nerede? Gerçekten varsanız beni iyi dinleyin. Muzır ve zalimsiniz! Orada canınız çok mu sıkılıyor da burada bizi karıncalar gibi eziyorsunuz?” “İnsanoğlu, ağlamaya doğarken başlar, yeterince ağladığında ise ölür.”

67/100 Like Spike Lee said “it’s not my cup of tea.” What can I say about this film, my first Kurosawa viewing. My biggest concern is the runtime, it simply does not justify the story at hand, several scenes drag out unnecessarily and I found myself losing interest too often. First off it’s difficult to be focused when watching a foreign film but when you’re trying to pay attention and this happens, it gets disinteresting very quickly. And while I recognise that this film has some deep underlying tones, I just could not build up the patience to explore them. Considering it’s a 1985 film, some of the gore and action sequences are questionable. It does feel like Kurosawa has retained his 50s aura and style into an 80s film and that’s not justifiable. It is written quite well and has absolutely gorgeous cinematography, especially the distant shots, the war sequences are excellent too, the colour in this film seems more heightened than other films of that era, just oozes more depth in each scene. It’s like HDR in 1985.
