Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch

Why is this movie so actually fucking sad? I’ll admit, outside of the various IP they’ve acquired in my lifetime, I’m not a big “Disney” person. This film, along with a long slew of other classic 90’s and early 2000’s Disney projects, is something I had seen many times in my childhood. Of course this was 20-odd years ago, so I can’t quite recall if it was on VHS or DVD, but either way – I loved this movie. I loved a lot of Disney films of that era as a kid. Hell, I think every kid did. As I watched this film, I couldn’t help thinking, “Really? This is the film I liked as a kid?” with its breakneck pacing and nearly cheesy writing. What I had to realize was that I shouldn’t be afraid to embrace something so whimsical. I was writing it off simply for being something that I felt I had outgrown as an adult. That’s when the film grabbed me and didn’t let go. The 2D animation alone had gripped me from the first frame (which we should bring back; I so miss traditional 2D animation). The last act is so incredible, and by the time the credits rolled, I must have cried a sizeable puddle. My eyes and face seriously got irritated from the tears, which then dried and caused more irritation (am I allergic to my own tears? Who knows). As I said in the opening of this review – why the fuck is this movie so sad? Seriously, it felt harsher than I had remembered and maybe a little more real than expected. It's great. It’s a classic. Avoid the soulless cash-grab live-action remake and put this one on. You’re guaranteed to have a much better time with it!
