Beautiful film, just a little drawn out, otherwise top-notch.

Excalibur

Kind of an introduction to the whole story/novel about King Arthur for me except the sword in the stone that can't be pulled off but this was incredibly moving to me. Feels so psychedelic and it becomes a nightmare. The Red sun. Gorgeous even though I watched with a 720p file but still looks amazing, kind of intended. Special movie.

Excalibur

“The future has taken root in the present.” It’s just as I predicted (https://boxd.it/2bPXW1). EXCALIBUR on rewatch works for me on nearly every level. It’s exactly the kind beautiful, dark, twisted fantasy film that I long for and would love to see made again. However, much like Camelot, there will never be another. Boorman’s vision is singular. Vivid. Soaked with saturated colors and staged with lush, sprawling sets that feel straight out of Le Morte d’Arthur. What Excaliburdoes with costuming and lighting and just sheer scope should be studied. In fact, it has (https://boxd.it/tLOk)but y’all aren’t ready for that conversation just yet. What is most impressive to methough is the sense Boorman leaves you with that these events are taking place outside of time, parallel to our own history and just ever so slightly out of reach. Which is one of the most crucial elements to any Arthurian adaptation. It should always leave you questioning if you’ve just experienced a fable or historical recounting, to which the answer is yes to both. Though not without flaws, it makes up for its weaker points with…literally everything else. Almost enough to make you believe the age of heroes will come again. If there’s a God, a director’s cut exists and one day I will see it.

Excalibur

As far as Arthurian retellings go, EXCALIBUR has got to be one of the, if not the best looking one of the bunch. We’ll get to the content of the film in just a moment, and whatever you may have to say about that, it’s got style. It’s bold. It’s fresh. It’s memorable. Every shot could be a painting, which is something I feel these larger than life, enduring legends deserve. What they do not deserve, however, is to be condensed like this. I won’t get into details but if you know the myths well, you know my issue. There’s a lot of story to tell about the once and future king and his noble knights. Too much to fit within two hours. It would have been much stronger if it had been more focused. But despite my criticisms, I cannot help but find the film’s boldness endearing. You just don’t get fantasy like this, then or now. As a lover of the genre, I appreciate that. I just wish those bold swings would have been followed up with a tighter vision. I suspect there’s a director’s cut out there. I would like to see it. Even if there’s not, I’d like to watch it again. I do have a feeling I will like it more on a second watch.

Excalibur

An unwieldily, overly-ambitious, beautifully rendered epic carried by the grandness of its scale and the confidence in its direction. Review to come.

Excalibur

“when a man lies, he murders some part of the world.” operatic poetry of lust, anger, violence, lies. the christian takeover of the old world, the battle between good and evil warped and everlasting. pagan romanticism ripped apart by the lust of man. the harmony of things, the happiness of the land, the purity of sex. the passage of time, or is this a vision of the future? the lunatic of the arthurian as a cycle, the once and future king yet to come but from long ago. the world was better off without humanity, boorman declares. it’s hard to argue.
