March Madness #7 (https://boxd.it/Sgfq8) Christopher Walken is excellent in this film but I unfortunately didn’t find the rest of the film all that interesting. I see it as a story of rebirth and purpose focused on a moving, meandering character instead of a single event which is why the story can feel almost shifty with the ways in it twists and changes in response to Johnny’s growth. This is all fine and good but as a film, especially as a Cronenberg film, it a lacked a certain oomf to it. To be frank it was a bit boring and uninteresting. I think it also doesn’t do the film any favors when you hold it up towards the other entries of Cronenberg’s filmography so far. It lacks a certain level of style, eccentricity and imagination that I’ve come to expect from Cronenberg and just ends up feeling like an average movie. Personally I find that Cronenberg is at his best when he does his own stuff and is able to get really weird and freaky and is able to really take you to interesting places with his stories. Overall the Deadzone isn’t a bad film by any means. It has great performances paired with this really nice cinematography and a narrative that is quite effective in the way it depicts this pain of isolation and this feeling of being burdened and cursed with purpose. It just didn’t quite grab me the way his other works did.
