The American Friend
70/100 I can’t even lie this took patience and for something so linear and essentially a thriller, they took their time. The films are exceptionally shot as usual but there’s not much going on here. Jonathan did Tom really dirty there at the end. I’ve really not got much to say about this. The momentary sequences are great, I enjoyed the tone and the motivations throughout the film. It was gradual and as much as I enjoyed the first inactive half of the film, I didn’t quite vibe with the second half even though it was more eventful. There wasn’t much communication, people kept popping out of nowhere, the action was nothing to look forward to and it just felt lifeless.
The American Friend
Before going into this film I had mainly only read Google's description of the film and so, oh boy, this was not what I expected at all. But I still loved it; the first half more than the second. I have to say its colors, cinematography - camerawork, composition, everything single thing is spectacular and beautiful! A true visual feast. It is admirable how completely unpredictable it was, even after I got settled in. Now, I'm excited to explore Wim Wenders's filmography. Also, I truly did not know this was a Tom Ripley film until someone said his name in the last hour - astonished I was. The soundtrack was very Hitchock-ian at times. It reminded me of Strangers on A Train (because obv), which I just found out was also based on a book by Patricia Highsmith. So this is the third book to film adaptation of hers that I've seen; love 2/3.
