Dressed to Kill
DTK draws clear influence from Hitchcock, but still manages to create a unique story with interesting characters and a gripping plot. The twist is great even if you figure it out prior to the reveal, with Caine playing one of his best roles. The killing is brutal, sex explicit and suspense which Hitchcock himself would be proud of.

Psicose que retorna à Alfred Hitchcock ao elevar suas questões psicológicas, mas que no meio de referenciar e retornar a sua base cria um filme que tem muuuuuuuuuuuitas questões. Já acho muito interessante o De Palma repensar Psicose de uma perspectiva que mais lembra Um Corpo que Cai que o próprio Psicose. Ele já se inicia com a provocação da cena do chuveiro, mas ao invés de já abraçar a cena icônica, ele apela pro male gaze ao abordar a visão feminina na perspectiva masculina e aqui já tece uma questão punitivista que beira a base do Slasher, não ironicamente a assassina tem uma estética que mais lembra o Giallo do que o Slasher, inclusive a arma característica sendo uma lâmina de barbear. Acredito que toda a construção da tensão, o primeiro ataque no elevador e a perseguição junto com a investigação são muito bons, mas quando precisa abordar a questão da Transexualidade ele é muito frágil e todo o final é muito arrastado. Tensionar a assassina de uma perspectiva de identidade e símbolos de gênero é algo que cria um dúbio sobre a identidade do assassino e permite uma criação de tensão muito boa. Agora quando precisa se explicar... Nossa senhora, era mais fácil fazer uma palestra logo. Ele é um filme mais interessante pela premissa e o exercício formal do De Palma do que necessariamente ele em si. Acho muito curioso como tacam pedras em Emília Perez e a maioria dessas pessoas coloca esse aqui num pedestal, lamento amores, mas esse aqui não é nem top 10 melhores do De Palma, Argento já fez um exercício Hitchcockiano com o seu "Síndrome Mortal" e é bem melhor.

De Palma Double Bill As I was looking through my film collection, I saw Dressed to Kill and thought that it was about time that I took some more of De Palma’s films off of my watchlist. And am I glad that I did. Going into this film, I already knew the twist, unfortunately having gotten that spoiled years ago after watching a documentary discussing transgender portrayals on the screen. Though I knew what was going to happen in the end, I still found this film to be a highly engaging watch. The set-up for the film is what surprised me the most, with nearly a third of the film dedicated to setting up this story. And, once we start getting towards the climax, every piece falls into place and creates a narrative that is intriguing and scintilating. Knowing that this was a negative portrayal of transgender people makes it a hard watch today, but setting that aside, the twist works really well to craft a climax that really is unforgettable. This is my first De Palma feature of the day, and the bar was set very high after finally getting to watch Dressed to Kill.

É interessante como o diretor, além fazer uma homenagem ao clássico "Psicose" de Hitchcock, também referencia os sub gêneros do Giallo e do Slasher. O Giallo apresentado justamente com a lógica do "Who done It?", além de tratar os símbolos do gênero, como luvas de couro e uma morte performática. Já o Slasher, é trabalhado após a cena do museu onde a personagem Kate embarca em um táxi a caminho da infidelidade com um estranho onde mais tarde sabemos que ele é soropositivo e acabou de adquirir a "marca da maldição" ao saber que o parceiro com quem se relacionou era soropositivo. Todos os signos de ambos os gêneros são postos na mesa para que a assassina apareça com a sua lâmina de barbear. Dito isso, é um filme bem problemático no seu Plot Twist, onde é feito um paralelo do transtorno mental psicose de Norman Bates com a transexualidade de Robert Elliot (Michael Caine). A explicação é tratada de forma grosseira como se fosse uma "disforia de gênero" capaz de tornar a personagem uma assassina. Contudo, é necessário compreender a idade do filme para não cometer nenhum anacronismo, e reconhecer como Hollywood vem aprendendo com os seus erros.

De Palma does Hitchcock’s 𝘗𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘰, but for the very horny 80s, except, this was already to be done with Psycho II (https://letterboxd.com/bulgogiboi/film/psycho-ii/), which I think is a better equivalent if we are to think of Norman Bates as an evil tranny. Of course, not tasteful by today’s standards, but De Palma puts on quite a show with some gorgeous shots to delve into a bit of giallo. Too many split diopter shots for me, but De Palma has always been interested in dual perspective and showing things two different ways, side by side, so I’ll just pass this off as experimental fun in his pursuit of cinematic double vision. Count on him for being able to get away with teaming up a hooker and a nerd to solve a crime. Not great, but definitely a romp. Fun and sleazy, as slashers go.

Este homenaje directo de Brian de Palma a Hitchcock deja una película poco reveladora pero demasiado entretenida donde de inicio a fin encontraras la mezcla perfecta del estilo Hitchcock y el toque del director en un thriller policiaco repleto de buenas actuaciones y escenas tributo a una de las películas más importantes del cine.
