Diary entries forMother Mary
Mother Mary
"Where do ghosts go when we don't need them anymore?" David Lowery is a filmmaker who crafts with poetry. Rhythm is dialogue is action is metaphor, intertwining into the notes of a melody, held together with intricate stitching. For the ones brave enough to open themselves and be free of expectation and explanations, this film is perfect.

Now this is fucking going for something. Those goddamn dance scenes alone, how the hell. Gonna be thinking of that and the final music scene for months
Mother Mary
there were some really cool and striking sequences in the movie that i really loved, but the ending left me unsatisfied and i wanted more out of this movie. great soundtrack tho, will definitely be streaming!
Mother Mary
Too many confusing metaphors that make me can't enjoy the movie, but great perfomances tho. All singers should be grateful that Anne Hathaway (Mother Mary) choose to be an actress (a fictional character) or else maybe she could swipe up all the singers. She's literally the Mother Mary.
Mother Mary
As the homoeroticism died as the film went on so did my interest. It lost me a little bit in the middle and my thoughts started to wander, then it brought me back. This film is bizarre, slightly esoteric and heavy on the symbolism. Of what (?), Iâm not so sure. All I know is Mary and Samâs relationship epitomises the passion of many female relationships and I dig that. Though I feel like a man (the director) representing that dilutes the effectiveness of the message. Iâm dying to find out who was singing in place of Anne Hathaway.
Mother Mary
Mother Mary feels as if Lowery took the tension and anxiety of the pop industry featured in Vox Lux and gave it a Strickland-esque twist, a la In Fabric to craft a compelling and visually stunning experience. Hathaway and Coel are a dynamic duo, each with strong characters, yet neither overpower the other. Arguably, Coel has the stronger performance, which I found to be the more captivating one, but as characters, they stand as equals. Just as the tagline of the film, this isnât quite a ghost story, there certainly is one, but it isnât the centerpiece of it. Here, we get an examination of hurt, loss, and anger told in Loweryâs unique storytelling, which leaves more room for thought than concrete answers. The storytelling is magnificent, as are the songs, which comes together to make a film that I surely wonât be forgetting about any time soon.

Really liked this a lot. Literally had only seen a still of Hathaway before going in, so had absolutely no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find this (mostly) two hander with two fantastic performances, held together by some beautiful work behind the camera by Lowery. I canât claim to entirely understand everything, nor do I really have an opinion (at this time) about the reality of everything. I am really excited to revisit this and see what reveals itself. 2026 Ranked (https://boxd.it/RN1V4)

When the credits rolled , I was sitting there and wondering " what did I just witness ? ". Hypnotic . David Lowery played with metaphors once again , this time steeped in ambiguity and artistry . It feels like you're reading a book and instead of you flipping the pages , it's the book that is in control of you and wouldn't let you put it down . It's heavy in conversations and relies more on sound and image than narrative . Came to my mind shortly after that there's not a single man in the film . It's just women , mainly Michaela and Anne , living ( or dreading ) in the moment and reassessing old wounds . Anne Hathway was impeccable . Especially the scene where she performs one of her song without any music . The sound of her feet thumping on the wooden floor as she submits herself , hurling her body on it as the floor creaks was like watching someone getting possessed in real time . Though it was titled after Anne's character , you cannot deny that Michaela Coel was truly the heart of this film . Transcendental . Jamming to the soundtrack right now .

This gave me the vibes of so many movies, MOSTLY In Fabric. Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway really vibe together on this. This movie has some really interesting visuals that I wish it went somewhere like Smile 2 went. You can tell FKA Twigs vibes written all over the music. Very sensual, very beautiful, very pure sounding. I feel like Michaela really gave the movie the vibes that it needed. Even if shes not speaking, her facial expression and acting were top tier (same with Anne Hathaway)
Mother Mary
Pop diva breakdowns peaked with Smile 2 but good effort.
