Clever and patient, ETTG is a great example as to why the French new wave is loved so much. Hitchcockian, in the very best way, this thriller keeps you in suspense for the entire time. A simple yet effective story makes for great viewing, and the end was perfectly executed. A great film.

It’s genuinely surprising that it took me this long to get to a film from Louis Malle, and now having seen this film, I hate that it took me so long. Malle’s eye for captivating shots (shots of Jeanne Moreau wandering through the Paris streets are breathtaking) makes the film a wonder to visually watch, but the attention to detail was really what makes this film work. The layering of the storylines, slowly crafting them to weave into a web to come to a conclusion that is both visually arresting (pun intended) and suits the overall story perfectly. The visual contrast of the film alone made it worth the watch, and it doesn’t hurt that the plot is great as well. I really was blown away by Elevator to the Gallows, and certainly will not be waiting any longer to see what else Malle’s filmography has to offer.
