The curse of beauty, Malèna showcases how women are often mistreated and sexualised in society. The film also shows how a young boy, who stalks Malèna, becomes obsessed with her. The film struggles with a story though, and spends too much time focused on Malèna.

89/100 First of all, I have been deceived because what I thought was the European uncut version turned out to be the regular Miramax cut, such fucking bullshit. Regardless, only thing missing was probably the nude scene. Now bitches really be hating their own. Like they drove Malena to whoredom, they didn’t give her food, they made her suffer for the pettiest of things and then you have men who are willing to take advantage of you and you can’t question them because it’s the great 1940s and to add to the misery, you don’t even get the support of your fellow women because they’re too jealous of your beauty and fear your calming essence in the form of their perverted husbands. It’s kind of like in Islam where women have to wear the hijab to protect themselves from men viewing them but turns out it’s enforced by men themselves because they can’t trust themselves. Oh I’m rambling but my point still stands, both men and women are bitches and god forbid a beautiful girl is born in a small ugly town, she is doomed for eternity. What starts off as a comedy ends up being a tragedy and enrages you to the core. Monica Belluci built a career of being beautiful and bad things happen to her because of her beauty and I don’t blame her. Another fantastic film as a result of that career choice. As for the boy, I thought he did good, his angle was really of the perverted narrator who does empathise with Malena. He represents the men who are willing to see the woman for their innocence and are not presumptuous. He wants to fight for her but he’s just a boy. People are questioning his perversion but he’s a kid and she’s his sexual awakening but what is quite clear that it was much more than an infatuation, it’s perhaps even more than love. He’s just got the greatest thing in front of him but there’s nothing he can do about it, it’s yearning and really not being the right age at the right time. It’s the stars not aligning. It’s unfortunate for him and as we see it’s unfortunate for Malena. Oh Malena I apologise to you, you goddess.

this was a hard watch intended by Tornatore, i presume. Malèna was a victim of the faults of people in the midst of war all for her beauty. The hypocrisy was portrayed beautifully and raw. a beautiful ending nonetheless

Malena foi um filme difícil de assistir, desconfortável até. Por mais que seja um filme muito interessante do ponto de vista da teoria da Madonna vs. Prostituta, que desenvolve muito bem como a sociedade vê uma mulher apenas sobre duas perspectivas unilaterais, o filme tem uma narrativa muito machista. É uma história que possui cenas desconfortáveis e que poderiam ter sido feitas de maneira diferente. Estava animada para assistir, porém sai com um gosto amargo na boca. O que foi de Malena eu até achei interessante, mas faltou algo. Uma visão feminina. Por isso o filme cai em uma história machista e que perde o seu potencial total.
