Matilda

I vaguely remember watching this movie as a kid and not liking it too much. Several years later, nothing has changed. I'm not too fond of films with lots of narration, and this movie has the worst narration of any movie I've seen. I hate hearing Danny DeVito every 10 minutes, whether it was his character or narration. That pissed me off so much. Was it that difficult to find anyone else in the world to do the narration other than Danny DeVito? The main antagonist is so comically and unrealistically evil that it's not funny. It's just flat-out ridiculous. You can make movies for children and give the villain a personality. Most characters are not good or mediocre with a bad actor (like Matilda). This movie is only a 2/10 instead of a 1/10 because of Ms. Honey.

Matilda

❝These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: you are not alone.❞ · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · I fell in love with Matilda from the first watch, and it has never lost any of its charm since then. The film is better than the book in my opinion, mainly due to its excellent cast. Mara Wilson was so, so good as Matilda: she perfectly embodied Matilda's mannerisms and was generally very likeable. Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are absolute treasures, and portrayed Harry and Zinnia really well, so much so I hated them passionately during my first watch. Pam Ferris was terrifying as Miss Trunchbull and I had nightmares about her for ages, while Embeth Davidtz's Miss Honey was the complete opposite; she was lovely and warm, and I desperately wanted her wardrobe (still do). I love the plot and the message behind the film: have the strength to stand up for yourself, no matter what sort of abuse you are going through. Matilda, though she had a home and family, was emotionally neglected, and poor Miss Honey was put down and bullied by Trunchbull from a very young age, leaving lasting impacts. But after finding each other, they were able to rise up and change their situations, along with a little telekinetic help. The soundtrack was bright and cosy, and the camerawork and editing was great: there was a very warm colour palette being used, and it almost made it seem like a fuzzy filter was added on top, which just adds to the nostalgia. Matilda is such a comforting film and I'll never get tired of watching it <3.
