Diary entries forThe Invisible Man
The Invisible Man
Claude Rains is perfect and naked. But I repeat myself
The Invisible Man
Electric Claude Rains out on an absolute lark! Gleeful, dark comedic menace, great early effects, and edited at such a lively (and tightly controlled) pace it gives the whole affair a nigh-modern feel.
The Invisible Man
This year's version will be brave on it's ideas and directing, but this... This right here is a classic. That VFX SLAPS.
The Invisible Man
I love how absolutely unhinged Griffin is, Claude Rains put on an incredible performance. The effects are astonishing for being nearly a century old, it holds up better than I ever expected. I lost count how many times I burst into laughter, so many hilarious moments. This film is perfect.
The Invisible Man
Effects are still mind-blowing, still my favorite Universal Monster filmđź–¤

The Invisible Man
The things I would do if I'm invisible, probably worse than whatever Dr. Griffin did. Kemp not only was a pussy but stupid
The Invisible Man
James Whale is a director I’ve only lightly touched on—Bride of Frankenstein being my entry point, a film I very much enjoyed. The Invisible Man feels like something else entirely. Where Bride of Frankenstein leans heavily into operatic, baroque drama, this feels much more impish in tone. Our titular character spends much of the runtime as more of a nuisance than anything, his world-dominating tendencies lurking further in the background—until it doesn’t, and the film pivots into something darker, beginning with the slaying of a policeman who dismisses the entire thing as a hoax. Technically, it’s groundbreaking. The tricks Whale and his team devised to realize “invisibility” still manages to impress me, but what elevates the entire experience is Claude Rains’ performance as Dr. Jack Griffin. Known primarily as a stage actor, his face unfamiliar to most, it was his voice that Whale was seized by—a raspy, distinctly British tone that conveyed both cold detachment and the unhinged malice of a man who sees everyone else as beneath him. It’s a performance that defines the film as much as the effects. What lingers, though, is the cruelty. The Invisible Man isn’t content to scare—it’s gleefully mean. It denies its audience a happy ending and racks up what must be the highest body count of the Universal monster cycle. He derails a train packed with passengers and sends his partner barreling off a cliff in a car. All while, I can only assume, completely butt naked. Just great stuff all around. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6)

The Invisible Man
was having a great time lmao-ing and marveling at the invisibleness of it all till they spray painted a kitten black for no reason like what the hell maybe the invisible man should have killed more cops after all.... also shout out Una O'Connor, between this and the bride of Frankenstein, she was the goat of flying into hysterics, truly the grandmother of all scream queens
