Jay Kelly

That tribute scene makes me bawling my eyes and warm my heart after all that Jay has done, this movie can be said to be absolute cinema because we are like in a journey of an actor or Jay Kelly which is full of ups and downs and I also like the scene of Jay Kelly's youth which shows his process of becoming an actor, this is like a Biopic but I like it. Please don't retire Jay Kelly, you can go again.

Jay Kelly

Poor absent father figure, white, privileged and successful, who remains selfish until the end even after watching all his failures parade before him throughout his life. Jay Kelly is a self-deluding film that reaches some good scenes, but they feel forced, like the therapy session, and overall lacking real weight. Failed fatherhood and the feeling of loneliness are the only things that truly have emotional strength, the rest is basically a man complaining and suffering the consequences of his own actions while he could simply do things right. Even so, it works as an acting character study. But beyond that… nothing more.

Poor me, poor me, pour me a stiff drink because this was a hard watch. Cute to begin with but got pretentious towards the end. I rolled my eyes at least twice during this. The Rachel Weisz look-a-like Daphne was attractive and Adam Sandler was the best part. Also they could’ve done this in like 1.5hrs. Not 2.25. Cinematography was great - I loved the colouring.

Has similar themes that sentimental value is also going for but despite the great directing and acting, I wasn’t fully wrapped with Jay Kelly since his whole issues are being explained to me. I kinda wanted to be like Sentimental Value in that it wasn’t as direct and that was very evident with Adam Sandler’s character where I essentially wanted him to be the main character. Good time and definitely a good ending

Jay Kelly

It was strange to see; suddenly it was really good, and then all of a sudden it was bad jokes and mediocre acting. Sometimes I'd think, "This is really good, it's a 4," and then suddenly I'd change my mind because of a bad joke.

“All my memories are movies” If I told you at some point in this movie Adam Sandler does George Clooney’s makeup would you believe me? My first Clooney! I think Adam Sandler deserves an award for Best Supporting Actor, a nomination at the least. I really enjoyed this. In this we see famous movie star, Jay Kelly, try to mend the relationships of his personal life after he starts to see retirement in his future. He realizes he doesn’t have much time left in fame, even though it can be a lifelong thing due to your impact, so now he shifts his focus on what matters more, family. He realizes that he’s spent so much time caught up in this lifestyle and being “the guy”, that he’s pushed people out and has never really made the time to care about the people around him. In return, this has especially resulted in a strained relationship with his daughters. It’s in this journey to make things better, we see a man who’s so used to the world bowing to his feet have to put pride and ego aside and be sincere. It’s also in this journey where Jay sees the real world again. There’s a scene where he’s on a train and for a second you see him admire the regular lifestyle of people. He’s looking around and sees faces that show happiness, mundaneness, calmness, etc. It’s been a while since the world around him wasn’t completely revolved around him and you see that for a second there, not in a resentful way but a way that brings a smile across his face. I think there’s a point in this lifestyle where you kind of just begin to live on autopilot. People schedule things for you, drive you places, and your only requirement is to show up and be the person everyone expects you to be. Your checkpoints in life become the work you’ve done and you realize you can’t truly remember the last time you had a real connection or memory. When was the last time you were Jay Kelly the family man and not Jay Kelly the movie star? I think what this movie really asks is, who are you to the world vs who are you to yourself? And for Jay, it was him realizing he couldn’t be the same person to the world that he is to his kids. Although I do think the first half of this is better than the second half, the ending did it for me. All his daughters wanted was a father, and he was so caught up in being Jay Kelly that he basically became that to them. There’s a lot of things you can pull from this about Hollywood and who people are behind closed doors, but at the end of the day this is also a movie you can just put on and enjoy at surface level. Good job.
