Diary entries forThe Player
The Player
A mischievous feast! Altman always with the precision layering, and that endlessly fun play-within-play structure. Never knowing who's appearing as themselves or a character in any given scene, I love it.
The Player
When I think of Robert Altman’s films, I think of sly films, with a quick script, A-list actors, and solid direction, all which create truly captivating films. The Player manages to take his aesthetic to the max, with all of his usual traits working to create something absoluely magical. And that’s what this film is; it’s simply magical. It’s so witty, it’s quick, it’s fun, and has an array of zany characters that you can’t help but get invested into. It’s such a fun story to watch unfold, I coudln’t take my eyes off the screen. It’s films like this that make me realize just why I love film as an art form, and I’d kill to make something as substantial as The Player. Altman has yet to dissapoint me, and I think that this is my favorite film I’ve seen yet of his. Every time I watch one of his films, I get the desire to continue into his filmography, but never do, but I think I’m actually going to try to check more of his films out throughout the year. He’s always impressed me, and this film certainly doesn’t break that mold. What a wonderful, wonderful film.
The Player
Absurdly good. Suspenseful, funny and visually entertaining. Also Tim Robbins has a somewhat erotic voice. Definitely gonna do a rewatch
The Player
Tim Robbins is truly excellent, man. This film is VERY meta, has some interesting editing, and is shot very well, but something is missing. I don't have a specific reason for why it didn't exactly click for me, other than it just didn't. Still a decent watch!

Cult of Personality 2024 (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/cult-of-personality-2024/) #27 of 52 | Elliott Gould (https://letterboxd.com/actor/elliott-gould/) I don’t know, the story is just uninteresting and I find it difficult to decipher the satirical message hidden within. Not really funny, not really intriguing. Maybe that’s the point?
The Player
You think Tim Robbins saw Susan Sarandon in the execution scene and was like “Susan in an execution drama….that could work.”
The Player
That opening shot is so fucking good.
The Player
La mejor dirección que he visto en un buen rato.
The Player
This was super meta!! The constant tonal changes to thriller and subsequent close-ups didn't work for me, though. They were neither serious nor funny. Overall, it's okay-ish. However, every scene with Richard E. Grant gets five stars/hearts, but the fact that Lemmon's cameo wasn't in any one of them is criminal and that's reality (https://youtu.be/1BG7yU5id2c?t=218)

That’s reality baby
