Kinds of Kindness
Yorgos, you really tested my patience
Kinds of Kindness
First one is good, second is okay and the last one sucks. As many people are saying, I wish the first section was extended to a feature and we just got that instead. I’ve never been a fan of anthology films, and this one really shows why. I left the cinema feeling cheated out of a good film because two others took up the screen time instead. Wasted potential out of a couple of good ideas, and a fantastic cast.
Kinds of Kindness
Of course Yorgos would follow up winning Oscars (via lady-Frankenstein-sexual-awakening beauty) with a near-3-hour essay telling us the conspiracy era is no social media fluke, we're all morally way closer to being in a cult (if we're not already in one!) than we want to admit, and we're not smart enough or good enough people at all to avoid it or credibly act like we're above it Of course I'd love it even more than Poor Things. Aside from the first twenty minutes it may even be my fav Yorgos; certainly feels like the most accessible, which is funnier still because of the runtime
Kinds of Kindness
Sweet dreams are NOT made of this. My brain literally stopped working after watching this, there's no kindness in this movie, thank you Mr. Yorgos for telling us what's "kindness" are.

Kinds of Kindness
Since seeing Poor Things earlier this year, I’ve come to appreciate Yorgos Lanthimos’s work more than I have any other director. I’ve seen and enjoyed plenty of “weird” films, but Lanthimos is the only director I can say with confidence never uses eccentricity for eccentricities sake. His characters are stripped down to the most basic form a person can take, and by putting them in such bizarre situations, he’s able to tell universal stories about the human condition and in this film specifically, love. It may be pretentious, but in that way I believe his films are sort of kafkaesque. Of his filmography that I’ve seen so far, I believe this one is the most similar to The Lobster. Both of these films are about how far people are willing to go for love, but in some ways I find this film far more nuanced. In The Lobster, love meant survival, but in Kindness, it felt like love was a sort of addiction. Something we seek out despite the detriment it may bring to ourselves and others, and as horrible as it is to watch, it’s impossible not to understand the feeling. I’m so glad I got to catch this in theaters before it left, definitely one of my favorites of the year.
Kinds of Kindness
I will classify it as a rom-com no matter how twisted and weird it is
Kinds of Kindness
Yorgos Lanthimos, yet again, has proven why he is one of the most interesting filmmakers currently working. Kinds of Kindness is the type of film that only Lanthimos would be able to make and make successful. It may not be as harrowing and bizarre as The Killing of a Sacred Deer or Dogtooth, but manages to find itself nestled comfortably between the two. It’s risky putting out a film this bold, especially after a career high with Poor Things last year, but it goes to show the power Lanthimos has as a filmmaker, someone who is completely comfortable in their craft to create something this eclectic. The actors that he worked with really made this work, with Plemons being the driving force behind the entire film. Stone, as per usual, is fantastic, and Dafoe is a very fun addition to each segment. Hong Chau is especially memorable within the segments, I only wish that she had been utilized more, since she was the least-used actor in the entire project, and I think that she definitely would have been able to contribute a lot more, espcially in The Death of R.M.F segment. Still, I think there was a lot of great chemistry between the entire cast, even with the stark contrasts between the segments. Absuridst comedy isn’t going to be for everyone, as I saw in my showing, when half of the theater left not even halfway through the film (though there were maybe 20 of us, that’s still a good amount for a Lanthimos picture). But, for those who get it, this is a playground where you can have so much fun and sit back and laugh at these peculiar stories. I’m surprised a film like this has gained so much traction and got a wide release, since these more risky-type films don’t tend to do terribly well at the box office. I’m just glad that Searchlight is willing to give him a chance (I mean, the man has produced some great films for them, and has gained them some Oscar wins and nominations, so they better let him do whatever he wants) and distribute this nationwide. I had such a good time watching this film, and honestly am very excited to give it another go.
