Watching this film made me feel a mix of fascination and discomfort. You’re drawn to Maxine, yet constantly aware of how far she’s willing to go, which makes every scene feel dangerous. There’s something deeply sinister in her hunger for fame—the way it slowly consumes her and blurs the line between ambition and obsession. You can feel her desperation, and that gives the film a constant tension that never truly lets up. On the other hand, the film doesn't offer much beyond its surface. Strip away the tension, and it’s a standard crime mystery using the dark underbelly of Old Hollywood as a convenient backdrop.
