Magnifique! Photographically this is as luscious a film as they come -- angles and forms and tones and movements speak volumes all in themselves, above and beyond any narrative point or structure. I read the word "alienating" thrown around in reference to this one but I couldn't be more energized by the visual WEIGHT of Tati's composition and direction. The vantage point is poised to take in the full measure of architecture and humanity choreographed all along its cobalt-gray expanse. A more meticulous production I seldom find, or one more superbly matched to the 70mm format. I feel I'm as distanced from Hulot's 1953 provincial, sand-in-your-shorts resort as can possibly be. But with that earlier scenario's own shade of tourism, and its occupants just as self-concerned and making their day-to-day way, I can find the same thread of Tati's awareness even with the Hulot character almost completely moved into the periphery. We have all the absurdities of urban life still freewheeling about and forcing their asymmetry against the clean, so-called pure forms we've built up around ourselves. With so many particles moving around on screen at the same time, I'm certain new details, gags, and delicate character interactions could be found on any future viewing. What a wonderful slow wave we can all still ride to this day.

I admire Tati’s ability to find pockets of humanity in environments deliberately designed to suppress it. Sprawling, unrelenting, hopeful. Bless this man
