Diary entries forRavenous
Ravenous
is this supposed to be a drama or horror comedy, i really can't tell.
Ravenous
Odd but fun bit of cannibal horror. Delightful performances by Carlyle and Jones. Would’ve loved more John Spencer. Very interesting score. Want to rewatch soon.

It was like a month ago I saw this for the first time, but I just had to watch it again. Fantastic movie. I love how grounded it feels. Robert Carlyle gives one of the most underappreciated performances in a horror movie you’ll ever see. Guy Pierce is also wonderful and adds a lot of depth to his character that almost feels out of place in a film like this, except it works brilliantly. My ONLY gripe is tonally, I think there are some missteps. But that’s a nitpick to what is overall an excellent piece of filmmaking that is criminally under-discussed.

Where have I been that this film was off my radar for this long. Holy shit, this movie is absolutely bonkers. It’s so intense and fun and everything you want from a 90’s horror, yet still feels elevated by its performances. Antonia Bird directs the hell out of this thing too. I cannot gush enough about how much I enjoyed it. Just as solid as it gets.

“Manifest Destiny. Western expansion.” In three words: not gay enough. Though RAVENOUS did surprise me with how unsettling the first third is. It’s got an eerie atmosphere and a disconcerting soundtrack which is going to do it for me every time. There’s a lot of ideas about America’s frontier expanding and the greed—the need for more, that comes with it. Which, yes, ties into the theme of cannibalism and consumption but…I don’t know if any of it particularly connected with me.

The punch sound effects had me laughing out loud
Ravenous
Nothing like some good old cannibalism as carnal desire metaphors (and manifest destiny too I guess)
