Smoke
With its fluctuating set of protagonists that seem to follow their own story and movie, Smoke is a film about making the unknowns humans, all the while containing it neatly within a centerpiece: the smoke shop. Like the photographs that Harvey Keitel's character takes everyday of his life, from the same position at the same time, people's faces are captured—some strangers and some regulars—and it points out that they all have a story. Smoke follows a mundane trio of stories, something that might be tuned out by fellow movie watchers, however the film takes these humans and gives them a fully fleshed out perspective on life, fit with wonderful dialogue. And while it isn't the most interesting piece of its kind, it does hit a lot of heartfelt notes—specifically its ending that a lot of people should see. 3.8/5
