THE DUMPSTER BATTLE is one of the best matches in the series, not because of the opposing teams’ bitter rivalry, but because of their friendship and enduring respect for one another. Here, volleyball is played with one simple goal in mind: have fun. Sport in its purest form. Having been a longtime fan of the series, I went into this adaptation very skeptical—how could they condense the story down so much? But even though moments are indeed missing, it turned out to be very impressive. Great animation, an intentional focus on interpersonal dynamics and character motivation, the music, the emotions, THE KENMA POV. I sobbed. I laughed. I cheered. Spectacular. Man. I wish volleyball were real. “Fly / Connect.”
