Diary entries forEmpire of the Sun
Empire of the Sun
Christian Bale has been killing it since he was a child. Carrying a film like this at that age is crazy. His performance feels raw, emotional, and very real. We all already know the story the real question is whether Spielberg nails the execution, and he definitely does. The film is visually beautiful. Some of those shots especially with the planes and the sun are just stunning. You can really feel the scale of war (the production design is so good) but at the same time the story stays focused on one child’s perspective. There’s this constant mix of innocence and harsh reality that makes the whole experience feel heavy. The last scene was very beautifully written. Overall, I wouldn’t say this is one of the best war films not even close but it’s still a good film.

Jim. You talk too much. Lots of good scenes in this one. Some rather long scenes though as well. Guess it was clear from the beginning that Bale was pretty talented. Interesting story; I knew nothing about any of it. There was some cheese that I didn’t love and I didn’t love the length, but a very solid movie nevertheless. 7.7
